Hello, I found this article while searching for help with fixing Microsoft Silverlight. I've recently changed browsers from Chrome to Microsoft IE 6. Just recently I seem to have a issue with loading websites that use Microsoft Silverlight. Every time I browse site that requires Microsoft Silverlight, the site crashes and I get a "npctrl.dll" error. I can't seem to find out how to fix the problem. Any aid getting Microsoft Silverlight to work is very appreciated! Thanks

A better question would be, "Why WOULDN'T Apple release Safari for Windows?" If I had it my way, I'd have Safari on every computer in the world so that I could publish some of the nicest-looking, best-behaved websites. Maybe someone at Apple thought, "Well, if we release it for Windows, people might actually see that the web doesn't have to be boring. We're essentially raising the bar of expectations. And in the process it might help to overthrow IE dominance so that developers might one day not be so wedged."

Good post.

On "Distributing computation work to browsers...", is this the idea behind Opera Unite? (http://unite.opera.com/)

There may have been something more strategic in mind when Apple released Safari for Windows, but it could have just as simply been low hanging fruit in the kick-ass-software-as-Trojan-horse genre, à la iTunes. It's a relatively simple way to put Apple technology in front of Winblows users. Maybe a little font anti-aliasing is all it takes for some to reconsider their operating system?!

The JS engine in current iterations of Firefox is called TraceMonkey. Tamarin is something else entirely (it was supposed to be used as a JS engine at some point, but I think it wasn't performant enough).
